fact

Novell NetWare 6.0

Novell Small Business Suite 6.0

symptom

Unable to bind IPX on server.

IPX won't load on server.

Error: "Attempt to bind IPX LAN protocol to Intel(R) 8255x-based Network connection failed.  (error=FFFFFF85)"

cause

No ServerID was set in the AUTOEXEC.NCF because IPX was not a selected protocol during server install.  The server id is the internal IPX number, and is required for IPX communications.  It is not created if the server is installed wth IP only.

fix

If NetWare 6 is installed without IPX selected, the server will not assign a SERVERID number.  If you want to bind IPX after the install, you'll have to assign a SERVERID.  This can be done at the console prompt by typing "serverid <id>."  Be sure to then add this line to the AUTOEXEC.NCF file.  Add the following line to the AUTOEXEC.NCF after the line for File Server Name:
SERVERID 12345678     (enter your own server id number.  By default this is an 8 digit number.)
